In this episode of Runners FM, we’re thrilled to have Luke Way from ISOCAPNIC with us. Through comprehensive testing of elite athletes, Luke and his team discovered that many are hindered by their respiratory system. ISOCAPNIC specifically tackles this challenge, and the results clearly indicate they're making significant strides in the field.
In this episode, I am joined by Luke Way and Dr. Andrew Sellers to discuss respiratory muscle training and the Breathe Way Better device. We explore the importance of training the respiratory system and how it can impact performance. We also discuss the limitations of the respiratory system and how respiratory muscle training can help overcome them. Overall, we provide valuable insights into the importance of respiratory muscle training for optimizing athletic potential.
We met with Sean Seale and discuss our backgrounds in sport and physiology, we go over the details of our physiologic testing and how we use it to prescribe training interventions, and take a deep dive into respiratory training with the Breathe Way Better device and how it can help many more people than just high performance athletes.
After coaching competitive swimming and earning a degree in human performance, Andrew pursued a master's at the University of Victoria and later specialized in anesthesia, enhancing his knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology. His passion for endurance sports led him to co-found Balance Point Racing and VO2 Master, developing the first portable VO2 testing equipment. Partnering with Luke Way, he helped introduce the Isocapnic Breathe Way Better, a revolutionary respiratory muscle training device for athletes.
With Sonya we go over how the respiratory system can boost performance. We discuss the respiratory system as a limiting factor, why your respiratory system is important in sport, the potential gains by training it, good mechanics, nasal breathing, how to monitor improvements of your respiratory system, altitude training, and VO2 max.
Luke chats with Peter Glassford about respiratory training with the Breathe Way Better. We discuss what isocapnic respiratory training is, and dispel come myths about respiratory muscle training. We also go over some common questions and concerns about this type of training intervention.
